Creating an English language version of a foreign film requires adaptation to US specifications, editing scenes, text, signs and audio, and adapting the picture to suit a larger audience domestically and internationally. In anticipation of the script rewrite, the editing of an original foreign language project must suit the needs and sensibilities of a broader audience.

This begins with deleting unwanted scenes - or even frames - deemed too violent or offensive. Each country may require its own modified version, known as a "cultural edit." Territories often demand more than one edited version, given the inherently different content standards of theatrical, DVD and broadcast.

Additionally, multilanguagesignage must often be digitally extracted and replaced, usually for the audience's comprehension but also frequently adapting to local products. The program or film must then be formatted to the DVD and broadcast artistic and technical specifications of each territory.
